Mike Huckabee told members of his political action committee tonight that he will not be John McCain's vice presidential candidate and will not be in Dayton for the rally tomorrow, contrary to news reports today.

In an e-mail from Hucakbee to supporters obtained by PolitickerOH.com, the governor said he was never invited to Dayton.

"There are reports that I’m on my way to Dayton tonight. Not true. Wasn’t invited to be there and any reports that I’m going to be there are a big surprise to me," Huckabee said.

On the vice presidential front, Huckabee said he was not vetted by McCain.

"I have never been contacted by the McCain campaign at any point about the VP slot," Huckabee said.

Huckabee said he hopes the VP nominee will be a genuine social conservative.

"I hope it will be a person with a solid record and solid convictions on the foundation issues that bring many of us to the process. I’m taking this unusual step to communicate so it will come from me and not from some of the ridiculous things being said on TV and websites tonight," he said.

The Huckabee message is also posted on his blog.
