DENVER - Treasurer Richard Cordray, the Democratic nominee for Ohio Attorney General, addressed Ohio's delegation to the Democratic National Convention Monday morning during breakfast and instead of talking about the race for attorney general, offered a personal reflection of U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who passed unexpectedly last week.
Cordray said he first met Tubbs Jones in 1990 while she was running for Ohio's Supreme Court and Cordray was running in his first election, vying for a state house seat.
"She made quite an impression around the state of Ohio," Cordray said.
Cordray pointed out that Tubbs Jones didn't get elected to the Supreme Court that year, but said she was never going to be one of seven anyway.
"She was clearly one of one," he said.
"She was something special," Cordray continued. "She was the kind of person that you like to be around."
Cordray recounted Tubbs Jones during the Democratic primary, when she had supported U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.).
Cordray spoke about watching Tubbs Jones speak in South Euclid just several weeks ago, explaining her position of supporting Clinton during the Democratic primary.
Cordray said that Tubbs Jones explained her support by saying that she had made a promise and made a commitment and her parents had taught her that when she made a promise and commitment she was to keep it, and she did.
"She was a lioness for her district," Cordray said. "She was an example for all of us. We all need to remember to try to be somebody people like to be around. It will be so sad to try to carry on without her, but we need to do it because that's what she would have expected us to do."
